Cameo at the Broadway
September 21, 2007
Thursday saw my first live poker appearance since Brighton, at a £500+50 no limit tournie at the Broadway in Birmingham. After a pleasant drive down I was looking forward to playing. A one hour clock with 8,000 chips starting at 25/50 on an hour clock seemd a bit slow for a monkey comp, so I was ready for the long haul.
A bit of merriment was had before the tournament when someone asked me before the tournie if I was going to stay in Birmingham if I made Day 2. Day 2? What on Earth is that?
What they should have asked was what would I do if I made Level 2, nevermind Day 2. Towards the end of Level 1 I picked up jacks, raised and got three callers, a flop of AxJd10d was good but not great as KQ could easily be out there. I led out and was insta-raised by Jeff Buffenbarger. I know Jeff isn’t shy about getting his chips in the middle and although he could easily have KQ here I was ahead of his range. Who knows if I run good for once maybe he could have pocket tens? So I reraised, Jeff pushed and I was allin, Jeff flipped Ad9d. The turn completed his flush and the river obviously didn’t pair the board, and I will never know what I would have done had I made Level 2!
Wasn’t really bothered, all I can do is keep playing well and sooner or later I will see the positive side of variance. Speaking of which tonight (Friday) I played a few MTTs online and actually managed to win one, shame it is the smallest prize pool multi I play (I won £2,200). Still a nice confidence boost and at the moment I will take whatever I can get.
Tomorrow I’m going back to the Broadway for their £1k main event. I believe with 12,500 chips at 25/50 I am a measly 6/1 shot to make it to the second level.
As I was writng this I was watching the $5k PLHE final table from this year’s WSOP. I am more than a little irritated by what an absolute tit Humberto Brenes is. I’m sure his success is almost all down to tilting his opponents by acting with no class whatsoever, rather than being capable of outplaying anyone. Question is, can this ability to tilt opponents by acting like someone just escaped from secure accomodation with cushioned walls be considered good poker?
