Poker, the Sox, and the Grinder

October 28, 2007

The PokerNews Cup ”down under” has yielded some familiar winners.  PokerNews editor, John “Schecky” Caldwell (pictured above with the PN gang - photo pilfered from PokerNews.com for a good cause) took down Event #4.  I suspect his lovely child bride, Jen Leo, has already mentally spent his winnings.  Or maybe she’s already put a down payment on a house.  I also saw that Billy “The Croc” Argyros won the HORSE event.  I played with The Croc in my first ever WSOP event this year.  The Croc is a great mixed game player and was having too much fun teasing Joe Hachem during our event - saying he didn’t know what the hell he was doing outside of hold’em.  Nice to see Billy take down the first ever HORSE event hosted in Australia.  Check out the main even coverage by Dr Pauly and Change100 over at PokerNews.

I’m doing far too much laundry, insuring that my Green Monstah T-shirt is at the ready for Sox viewing.  My brother Matty was very confident going into Game One and rested his GM T, opting instead for his Papelbon jersey.  But we’ve both been wearing the green since.  We aren’t the only one with a Sox superstition.  Rumor has it the Red Sox manager Terry Francona makes his team play cribbage as a pre-game ritual - at least that’s what he’s told his players.  I suspect Francona is just a cribbage shark picking on his cribbage fish.  The above picture of Papelbon and Lowell was taken by a photographer that will remain anonymous.  Link here for clues as to where and when this picture was taken.  If you couldn’t tell by the expressions on their faces, I think this quote by Beckett sums it up, “We got to listen to Cinco Ocho [Papelbon] yell at Mike Lowell for beating him in cribbage the whole way, it was great.”

In my continuing house renovations, all the tile has been ripped up in my kitchen.  I thought that a thinset covered concrete floor would inspire me to make my replacement flooring choice sooner.  So far I’m still debating.  My neighbors recommended I try The Tile Guy.  I went over there on Friday, wearing my PokerPro hoody that Grubby stole for me last year.  As soon as I walked in, one of the guys said, “You’re into poker?”  At that point, he got the boss, who was reading Bluff Magazine at the time.  Needless to say I got top notch service.  I still have to get the thinset up - I’m still debating between a grinder (no not The Grinder, pictured above at the 2007 WSOP) - a concrete grinder - and a power hammer.  Tomorrow I’ll pick up one and give it a try.

The WPT event at Niagara is underway and I see that Jonathon Little is looking good after his Day One.  I mostly wanted to mention it as an excuse to post my pic of Fiery Justice in one of my favorite T-shirts at the Commerce earlier this year.  I see that Shaniac has also survived his Day One.  Unless he gets a sudden burst of blogging energy, I’ll be forced to read about it on one of the poker media outlets instead of his blog.  sigh.
