When did it become wrong?

October 28, 2007

This has nothing to do with poker..but everything to do with how I feel today.

When did it become wrong…

  • to be a small-l liberal?
  • to care about other people - not matter their colour or creed?
  • to believe that immigrants build society, not threaten it?
  • to stand up and be vocal for what you believe in?
  • to be passionate for your cause?
  • to believe that a woman has a right to control her future, her choices, her body?
  • to believe that men have the rights to be sensitive, loving and still secure in their masculinity?
  • to not be afraid to celebrate love in any form?
  • to challenge authority without fear of reprisal?
  • to hate war?
  • to desperately want a world full of peace?
  • to believe food is more important than bombs?
  • to believe that the environment is more precious than growing the economy?
  • to believe that there is more to life than the next shopping trip, the bigger car, the acquisition of more meaningless stuff?
  • to be educated in poetry, and art and literature?
  • to not believe in God?
  • to believe that non conformity is sometimes a good thing?
  • to protest against a government that I don’t feel represents me?

I was born in the 60s, and I believe that the generation raised in the 60s has forgotten those values which were meant to make us a better society - in the pursuit of the all mighty dollar. I am angry that the generation younger than I are only concerned about how they look and what the Hollywood gossip says they should wear today.

I resent that they hypocrites of the pulpit can make decisions which directly and specifically affect my life. I’m angry that neither the country of my birth, nor the country of my residence, has a political party which will do anything but kowtow to the lowest common denominator of a brainwashed society.

I’m disappointed in a world which I had so much hope for as a teenager. As I slip into middle age, I’m nothing but scared and jaded. I realize exactly why I don’t have children – I don’t want them to inherit this world.
