Bristol Main Event

November 11, 2007

I played Day 1A of this £2.5k buy-in event last Thursday. We had 15k chips on a one hour clock. I spent all day playing a frustrating game of one step forward, one step back.

The biggest pot I played unfolded as follows. Someone wearing a Eurobet shirt (so I assume an online qualifier) announced to the table during the last level of play for the day that he didn’t want to come back on Saturday. I had 21k chips with the blinds at 300/600 ante 50 with average stack at 28k. Eurobet man had 10,300 and opened the pot to 2,300 utg+1. After some thought I flat called on the button, I didn’t think either of the blinds would attempt a squeeze play with a worse hand and I could evaluate Eurobet man’s reaction to the flop in position. The flop was 10-9-6 rainbow, and he instantly shoved his remaining 8k in to the pot. I made the call pretty certain I was ahead against overcards. He had the worst possible overcards for my hand though, QJ, giving him plenty of outs. In fact, I’m only 58% favourite here, and the turn card was one of four that left me drawing dead.

Down to 10k chips, I then made a mess of my exit hand. Basically I had 64 in the small blind and value bet the 6 river on a AK6A6 board and wanted to throw up when the table chipleader set me in. This was just five minutes before the end of play, I could have passed and come back with 6k but instead I called and was obviously shown an ace and that was that (he went on to finish 2nd). Joe Beevers went on to win this event, not a surprise to me as I shared a table with him and was very impressed with his play.

Managed to win back the Bristol buy-in with another deep online Sunday MTT run tonight, taking 3rd/154 in the Betfair $50k guaranteed for $5,950. Felt sure I was going to win it when I had 60% of the chips when we were three-handed, but basically went on to lose a huge race with 77 v AQ. Still can’t complain, particularly as 7-handed I got crippled to 25k chips and then found myself with half my stack posted in the big blind. That’s two third places in the last three attempts in the Betfair Sunday night jobbie, nothing like some positive variance but also a bit disappointed I didn’t win either one.

Off to the beach this week, about time aswell as I could do with a warm sunny climate, good food and beautiful scenery. Describes Blackpool perfectly don’t you think. I’m definitely playing the UKPT event there on Thursday, I may trundle up to donate in a £500 tournie on Tuesday also, but that depends on whether I can be bothered or not.

Talking of future plans, I really need to sort out where I’m going to be for the next three months, I’m 95% at the Bellagio for the first two weeks of December, I’m not sure about after that though, with the Aussie Millions and PokerStars Carribean Adventure possibilities, although on the other hand I could go totally nuts and decide to stay in England, which would be silly in the extreme.
