Player Controversy

March 1, 2008

While perusing the threads on 2+2, my attention was arrested by forum member “Britessential” . This person, whom I will label with a generic “he” since his profile provides no gender clue, apparently enjoys tossing out controversies to see what reactions get flung back. In his latest post,

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthread.php?t=143295

he makes the unsubstantiated claim that the vast majority of on-line poker players are obsessively addicted to the game. The disdain he holds for nearly all these players is palpable. One wonders why he condescends to play at all, considering he must interact with these sad little people.Could it be his “insights” are an assessment of himself: does he spend hours at a time on-line, neglecting friends and family? Or is he, instead, in full control of himself and genuinely dismayed that his fellow players lack the same high ideals?Or is he merely a troll seeking to stir things up?

Whatever the case, he seems to have hit a nerve among forum members. Some agree with him, some call for his ban, some fervently defend their compulsive natures, thus lending credence to his argument. His post elicited quite the response.

Perhaps the point “Britessential” was trying to make could be couched in more gentile terms. Say, “moderation in all things”, for example. But then, when has gentility elicited much of a response on any Internet forum?
